Celebrating the Nation's Birthday— “Finger-Tip Brilliance: Accordion Exhibition” Opens

To celebrate the 73rd anniversary of our great motherland and welcome the convening of the 20th National People's Congress, under the guidance of the Dalian Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism and the Zhongshan District Bureau of Culture and Tourism, the "Celebrating the Motherland's Birthday and Welcoming the 20th National Congress— — Fingertip Splendor: Accordion Exhibition "was grandly launched on October 1, 2022. The exhibition uses the melodious sounds of the" Wind Whisperer" accordion to sing praises to the Party and the motherland.

1The accordion originated in Europe in 1822—its fundamental sound production principle was derived from the reed mechanism of the ancient Chinese folk instrument, the sheng. This also gave rise to modern Chinese accordion art, which drew inspiration from European and global accordion cultures while being rooted in national music, guided by the aesthetic principles of Confucianism and Taoism.。

China's accordion artistry truly flourished after the founding of the People's Republic of China. From the early 1950s to the early 1970s, the accordion experienced a period of significant growth and development in China. Following a unique trajectory—from military units to civilian communities, from factories to schools, and from cities to rural areas—it achieved extraordinary popularity among the Chinese populace.

We present nearly a hundred accordions from diverse nations and ethnic groups worldwide, alongside several accordions bearing the red imprint of New China's development. This exhibition interprets accordion artistry through four dimensions:

"Origins of the Accordion"

"The Development of Chinese Accordion"

"Stylistic Characteristics of World Accordions"

"Forms of Accordion Performance"

Additionally, we have invited Zhang Deyong—a Dalian-based accordion collector, founder of the Deyong Accordion Ensemble, and instructor for public accordion classes—to perform live and share stories about the instrument.

This exhibition employs a static + dynamic approach, combining static displays, historical video screenings, stereo music appreciation, free masterclasses by accordion virtuosos, and accordion roadshows. This multifaceted presentation offers visitors a profound immersion in the accordion exhibition, evoking nostalgic memories of musical artistry during the vibrant era.
