From a Youth in Salzburg

to a Globally Revered Maestro

How did Karajan compose his musical legend?

Let us step into his artistic world together.

Herbert von Karajan was born on April 5, 1908, in Salzburg, Austria—the birthplace of Mozart, one of the world's greatest musical geniuses.

Karajan commanded the podium for over 60 years. He led numerous top European orchestras and shared a remarkable 34-year partnership with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Throughout his enduring partnership with the Berlin Philharmonic, Karajan functioned as a demanding artistic sculptor. At every rehearsal, he demanded near-perfection from the musicians, striving for the utmost precision in both musical notes and emotional expression.

Passionate about recording and directing, he left behind an extensive legacy of audio and video materials (to date, he has released nearly 200 million records across approximately 700 recordings), including numerous orchestral and opera recordings as well as opera films. His repertoire spanned from Baroque to post-Romantic European composers, encompassing works by some modernist composers as well.

Some works, such as Beethoven's symphonies, were recorded multiple times. Karajan enjoyed immense prestige in the music world, earning the supreme accolade of "Emperor of Conductors."

He passed away in 1989. Looking back on his life, it was not always smooth sailing. He experienced the same hardships and upheavals as ordinary people. Ultimately, he ascended to the podium of the world's top orchestras, wielding the power of a mighty army—this was the most glorious chapter of his life!

Music is my life

My very existence

"Music is my life, my very existence." This famous quote from Karajan profoundly captures his boundless passion and dedication to music. Even today, although Karajan has passed away, his music, spirit, and fervor continue to resonate in every note, inspiring musicians and music lovers worldwide. On this day commemorating the great conductor, let us once again listen to his interpretations, feel the timeless charm of his music, and pay tribute to Karajan, the eternal musical magician.

【The Immortal Legend in Karajan's Recordings】

Karajan's illustrious musical career left behind not only legendary experiences but also a vast treasure trove of recording masterpieces.

Mozart's works radiate the elegance and harmony of classical music. The Requiem is solemn and reverent, with the choir and orchestra blending seamlessly to create a profound sense of sacredness; The Overture to The Marriage of Figaro features a lively rhythm and a melody that is both nimble and exquisitely crafted, showcasing the beauty of classical music. Wagner's works are filled with grand dramatic tension, as seen in the overtures from The Ring of the Nibelung series, which employ a massive orchestra, intense harmonies, and stirring melodies to depict the epic scenes and fierce conflicts of mythical tales. Bizet's Carmen Overture is passionate and exuberant, rich with Spanish flavor; Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, "From the New World," brims with homesickness and national character; Tchaikovsky's Waltz from the third movement of Symphony No. 5 in E minor is melodically beautiful and deeply affectionate. Additionally, symphonies by composers such as Beethoven and Brahms, recorded under Karajan's baton, have become timeless musical classics.
