At 3:00 PM on October 1, 1949, during the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China, Chairman Mao solemnly declared to the world from the Tiananmen Rooftop in Beijing: "The People's Republic of China and the Central People's Government are hereby established!" Instantly, the square erupted in thunderous cheers and fervent enthusiasm.

Amid the stirring strains of "The March of the Volunteers," Chairman Mao pressed a button, and the first vibrant five-starred red flag of New China slowly rose. The entire crowd stood in solemn silence, paying respects to the national flag. Across the square, fifty-four ceremonial cannons fired twenty-eight salutes, symbolizing the glorious twenty-eight-year journey of arduous struggle led by the Communist Party of China.
